Congressional Baseball Game took on special meaning a day after shooting

Mr Scalise, 51, a Louisiana Republican who is the No 3 House Republican, remained in critical condition at a hospital a few miles from the stadium after undergoing a third surgery on Thursday.

Scalise was fielding balls at second base during the practice Wednesday when he was shot in the hip, and sustained serious injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Members of the US Congress took part in the traditional Republicans vs Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honour Steve Scalise, the congressman who was critically wounded by a gunman as his team practised a day before.

On Thursday, the hospital reiterated that Scalise will need more operations and will be in the hospital “for some time”. “We will provide periodic updates“. “And that camaraderie, I think, will be very positive as we go forward”, Pelosi said at a press conference on Thursday.

President Donald Trump delivered a message via video before the game.

The first pitch was thrown by one of the two heroes of the shooting, member of the Capitol Police David Bailey, who along with colleague Crystal Griner are credited with taking down the gunman.

At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise’s condition is more hard than people first realized.

Rep. Scalise was shot during baseball practice with the GOP team early Wednesday morning after a man approached the field and opened fire.

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

“I want to take a moment to send our thoughts, love, and prayers to Congressman Steve Scalise and his entire family”, he said.

Like other Republican lawmakers who were on that field in Alexandria, Virginia, Scalise was preparing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game that – despite the horrific shooting – continued as scheduled on Thursday evening.

The shooting has raised questions about lawmakers’ security, renewed the nation’s contentious debate over guns and drawn new attention to the harsh rhetoric that reflects America’s political polarization.

Rep. Trent Franks told Kate Bolduan on “Erin Burnett OutFront” that he has also been contacted by Capitol Police. The Democratic side won in a blowout, but the game was played in Scalise’s honor with lawmakers of both parties dressed in purple in recognition of Scalise’s Louisiana State University affiliation. He says, “They ran right into the fire” and saved a lot of lives.

The Congressional Baseball Game for Charity confirmed the milestone on Facebook.
