Condition of lawmaker shot at baseball practice upgraded

Scalise had another surgery Saturday, the latest in a series of operations that’s stretched from the day of the attack Wednesday, and the doctors said he “continues to show signs of improvement”.

Scalise was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia.

A source said investigators are not sure of the significance of the names and it is not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

Scalise can hope to make an “excellent recovery”, his trauma surgeon told the Associated Press on Friday.

Jennifer Scalise also is thanking the first responders who rushed to her husband’s aid Wednesday and the staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where her husband remains in critical condition. Scalise and the other legislators present at the baseball practice-including Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) -were saved when Scalise’s security detail fired back at Hodgkinson. Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident.

The gunman, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, was shot and killed by responding officers.

Officials said Hodgkinson was carrying notes on which he had written the names of some Republican lawmakers.

Doctors say House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES’) has a good possibility of recovery after he was at “imminent risk of death” from a gunshot wound to the hip two days ago. He will be in the hospital for some time.

Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis., left, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of N.Y., House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., applaud a message by President Donald Trump on the video board, before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington. “This was a Republican practice, the suspected shooter asked me who was practicing, I told him it was the Republicans”.
