12-Year-Old Kept Locked in Bathroom Weighs 30lbs: Sheriff

Brandy Jaynes, a mother from Toquerville, Utah, has been arrested for aggravated child abuse after her son was found hidden away, suffering from extreme malnutrition and apparent neglect. The two children did not require medical attention and are now in the care of child protective services. “So they could give instructions to the child that was in the room”, WCSO Lt. David Crouse told CBS.

“The child looked like he was the victim of a concentration camp from World War II”, he said. “Skin and bones and only weighing 30 pounds”.

Detectives said the living conditions inside the bathroom were “deplorable”. “I wish I could unsee it”.

According to PEOPLE, the bathroom, covered with urine and feces when the boy’s father found him, also had layers of duct tape over the light switches to ensure they stayed off, as well as two locks to ensure the child couldn’t get out.

The investigation started January 8 when the boy’s father took him to the hospital. “The toilet bowl was full of feces to the point that you could not see any water, but the bowl was half full of feces”.

The boy likely was kept in the dark, Crouse said. The two siblings, who show no signs of abuse, have been place in state custody.

The siblings also said they hadn’t spoken to their brother through the bathroom door in six months, according to what Crouse told the Associated Press. Crouse said. “It is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever had to see, I wish I could unsee it”.

Police say the woman said the boy wanted to sleep in the bathroom and she tried to feed him protein shakes.

“It would be my definition of a torture room.” “I’ve seen other terrible things, but this is one of those things I’ll never forget”. “I’ve seen other frightful things, but this is one of those things I’ll never forget”.

He also said those involved in the case when it first started worked non-stop until they were satisfied the children were safe.

The boy is expected to remain in hospital for several weeks to recover. Crouse said they know that Jaynes and her husband were separated, but they do not know how long it had been since the father had last seen his son.

The boy’s mother, Brandy K. Jaynes, 36, of Toquerville, was charged Monday in 5th District Court with child abuse causing serious injury, a second-degree felony. Her bail now stands at $30,000.
