WikiLeaks said in its tweet blaming Ecuador that Assange’s internet was cut shortly after it published transcripts of paid speeches Clinton gave to Goldman Sachs.
The site has been posting thousands of stolen emails from Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, potentially helping her presidential rival Donald Trump.
“QUITO, Ecuador “ Ecuador has cut off WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange”s internet access within the South American country”s London embassy, WikiLeaks said in a statement on its website Monday.
“In that respect, Ecuador, exercising its sovereign right, has temporarily restricted access to part of its communications systems in its UK Embassy”, it added in a statement.
Update: The State Department has denied this allegation.
“While our concerns about WikiLeaks are longstanding, any suggestion that Secretary Kerry or the State Department were involved in shutting down WikiLeaks is false”, Kirby said. Nation One News had published a report stating that a man, with a black bag over his head, had been escorted from the building by police.
Assange has lived and worked in Ecuador’s London embassy since June 2012 after a British court ordered him extradited to Sweden to face questioning in a sexual molestation case involving two female WikiLeaks supporters.
WikiLeaks is accusing U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry of trying to stop the site from publishing stolen emails from Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
The disclosure was the 11th installation in a series of leaks that have captured the workings of Clinton’s inner circle and included excerpts of her well-compensated speeches to investment bank Goldman Sachs. They further stated that the organization had activated the “appropriate contingency plans”.
The incident attracted a storm of comments and speculation on social media from across the world.
Assange fears that the Swedes would turn him over to U.S. authorities, who may charge him with conspiracy.
Ecuador, however, said it wasn’t revoking the asylum it granted to Assange in 2012. I would like Hillary to win, ‘ Correa told broadcaster Russia Today last month.
Whatever its motive, Assange isn’t likely to submit to the internet ban quietly.
Assange runs WikiLeaks from the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Pre-commitments are cryptographic functions that can be used to verify the integrity of material released subsequently.
