KVIC chief defends Modi’s photo on calendar, diary

Calendars and diaries issued by government-owned Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in India have replaced Mahatma Gandhi’s cover photograph with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s, and it has not gone down well with people.The protestors also demanded reprinting of the calendars with Gandhi’s picture being featured on them. Modi can be seen spinning the charkha instead of Mahatma Gandhi on the 2017 calendars and diaries of the state-run Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The employees observed silent protest at the Vile Parle headquarters and while wearing black bands over their mouths prayed to Mahatma Gandhi, according to media reports. IANS quoted Saxena as saying that PM Modi is “khadi’s biggest brand ambassador” and that he has made it popular in India as well as overseas.KVIC chairman V.K. Saxena defended the move, saying “there’s no rule or tradition that only Mahatma Gandhi’s picture can be published on these items”.
