Ten movies to get excited about this summer: Howell

Yes, uh-huh, of course I know there will be a new Spider-Man movie this summer, as well as the latest Transformers, Cars, Planet of the Apes and Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. All of which will be critically dealt with in the weeks ahead. But this here column is all about me, and hopefully at least a little bit about you. It’s my annual list of the 10 summer movies I’m most looking forward to.That’s not to be confused with my list of the best movies of 2017, which I’ll deliver at year’s end. I suspect most of the titles below won’t be on it.These are the 10 pictures that look to get my mojo going as a movie lover, not necessarily as a movie critic. I’ve only seen one of them so far, so my optimism may prove unfounded. (Let’s not talk about my unwarranted advance excitement in 2015 for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., OK?)Article Continued BelowLet’s get the summer tires on and roll into my hoped-for thrills of the 2017 season of fun, listed in order of scheduled release:Rocket and Baby Groot steal scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.  (Disney-Marvel Studios)  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5):Bitter experience has taught me that ensemble comedy sequels rarely reach the hilarity highs of their predecessors (The Hangover 2, anyone?) Undaunted, I’m confident there’s still juice in the jet packs of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel). I crack up watching the trailer gag where Rocket tries to stop Groot from launching an atomic bomb. Quebec actor Patrick Huard, left, and Ontario actor Colm Feore give details of their new film Bon Cop Bad Cop 2, sequel to their buddy cop hit of a decade ago in which Francophone and Anglophones cops have to team up and cross provincial borders to solve a crime.  (Peter Howell / Toronto Star)
