CISF ELECTS NEW BOARD CHAIR

Dr. Tite Tiénou to Lead Christian International Scholarship Foundation

Deerfield, IL. – Dr. Tite Tiénou, well-known academic and global church leader has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Christian International Scholarship Foundation (CISF).

CISF supports prominent Christian leaders from the Majority World to attain advanced theological education at seminaries in the United States and around the world.

“I am excited and privileged to accept this challenge,” said Dr.Tiénou. “This new responsibility aligns closely with my concern for the development and maturity of the global church, that it might be both faithful to the gospel and rooted in the local culture, whatever the context. Our scholars are widely recognized for leading the way both in global theological education as well as serving as opinion and thought leaders in their home countries, not only in the church but in society as a whole. They are playing key roles in church leadership so desperately needed in these regions.”

Dr. Tiénou is particularly renowned for his leadership of Christian initiatives in Africa that have resulted in significant and long-term benefit to the Christian church on that continent. Dr. Tiénou is currently Dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois where he has served since 1997.

Prior to coming to Trinity, Dr. Tiénou served as president and dean of the Faculté de Théologie Evangélique de l'Alliance in Abidjan, Côte 'Ivoire West Africa, and taught for nine years at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York. He was the founding director and professor at the Maranatha Institute in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, in addition to being a pastor in the Central Church of the Christian Alliance Church.

Dr. Tiénou earned the Doctor of Philosophy in intercultural studies and the Master of Arts in missiology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He earned the Maîtrise en Théologie at Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France, and the Bachelor of Science in theology at Nyack College in New York where he graduated cum laude. He and his wife, Marie have four grown children and reside in Gurnee, IL

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Tiénou in this strategic role at this time in our history, given the opportunities to serve the global church,” commented Dr. Steve Hayner, CISF co-founder and long-time board member. “We are very blessed.”

CISF supports proven Christian leaders from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East primarily at the doctoral level. These scholars attend seminaries such as Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Ill.; Fuller Seminary, Pasadena, Calif.; Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.; and several institutions in the United Kingdom, Africa, Hong Kong and South America.  More than 150 graduates have been supported and returned to bring significant leadership to the church in their home countries.

CISF supported graduates include leaders who have initiated the founding of new seminaries; reconciliation efforts between Jews, Christians, and Moslems in the Middle East; relief efforts after the bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa; movements to protect African women from abuse such as female circumcision; and leading the church in its response to religious violence and the AIDS crisis in Africa.

“CISF exists to help develop highly trained, Christian leaders. This is the greatest need in the church around the world today.”  Tienou said.
